And yes, F2 works out of the box just make sure on your Mac keyboard you lock the function key so that F2 means F2 and not “decrease brightness”ītw, I also discovered through System preferences > Keyboard > shortcuts that any apps menu can have custom shortcuts. Microsoft offers full customisation of keyboard shortcuts for every command in an app menu called “configure shortcuts” or something like that. Things have changed somewhere along the way, or maybe I missed it to begin with. I enjoy the consistency of working seamlessly from iPad to Mac, and the collaboration tools are genuinely useful. Can you? I recall the transition and the sometimes painfully gradual return of certain key features, but I can't think of any still missing. Numbers was off to an amazing start a decade ago, and now it's so painfully slow I can't use it. When they harmonized the iOS versions they lost features and the performance is abysmal. I use these apps time to time, but generally ignore them. Maybe, but the ribbon is less discoverable than Apple's side panels, so why put up with the loss of vertical space?
No benefit except discoverability, which is a primary goal of a good UI. It's not better, which is why people have to adjust to it rather than want to use it. Just about everyone has adjusted to it, but the ribbon is a less efficient bit of visual chrome over the top of the old menu system and delivers no feature that the menus didn't. I'm sorry, but if you haven't adjusted to it in 15+ years maybe your inability to learn makes you a liability.ĭon't be like that. And that number is only getting bigger as people who want the legacy menus gets smaller. There's an entire generation of office workers who have never used anything but the Ribbon. I cannot say the same about Microsoft at all these days.Īt this point MS Office has had the Ribbon longer than it had drop down menus. So I applaud Apple for keeping this suit updated and at least pretending to give a damn about the user experience. Anything that's easier to use and doesn't take half the damn screen with a fat ribbon + fat title bar is a win for the user. I was going to make the joke of "who on earth uses this still?" Then I remember just how awful Office UI has become.
